The New MCSA: Windows Server 2003 Security Specialization Skills Update

Times change, Certifications change and skill sets change – seems everything has or is changing in IT. This holds true for Windows Server 2003 certifications – some of which have been around for six years.  CompTIA has been encouraging those who hold their certifications to “update” them with newer releases (A+ Certification from 1999 is little different from the A+ Series offered in 2009).  Microsoft is also encouraging people to update or “validate” their certifications.

Microsoft just released a new certification exam – the ">70-699.  This exam is intended for those who currently possess the MCSA Security certification to validate that their MCSA 2003 Security Specialization skills are up to date.  This does make a lot of sense – but only if you assume that those who hold this and other older certifications have done nothing to keep their skill sets up to date.

Below is a current breakdown of the areas covered by the exam.  Nothing really groundbreaking here – coverage of still commonly used technologies, but also covering new technologies since the first MCSA Security exam was released. Good luck, happy studying, err – “reviewing”.

Security for Users, Computers, and Groups

  • Manage local, roaming, and mandatory user profiles.
  • Create and manage computer accounts in an Active Directory environment.
  • Create, manage, and troubleshoot user and group accounts.
  • Troubleshoot user authentication issues.
  • Configure access to files and folders.
  • Monitor and analyze security events.
  • Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining Network Security

  • Implement secure network administration procedures.
  • Manage security for system recovery.
  • Configure security based on server roles.
  • Plan and deploy security settings.
  • Implementing, Managing, and Troubleshooting Security for Network Communications

  • Configure Routing and Remote Access user authentication.
  • Plan IPsec deployment.
  • Deploy and manage IPsec policies.
  • Implement security for wireless networks.
  • Install, manage, and configure Certificate Services.
  • Configuring Client Security Features

  • Configure Windows Firewall.
  • Configure Windows Internet Explorer.
  • Configure file and folder access.
  • Configure user account control (UAC).
  • Configure BitLocker and BitLocker To Go.
  • Configure application restrictions.
  • Configure authentication and authorization.

    Microsoft Bounty Programs

This documentation is archived and is not being maintained.

Calling all Microsoft friends, hackers, and researchers! Do you want to help us protect customers, making some of our most popular products better… and earn money doing so? Step right up!

Microsoft offers direct payments in exchange for reporting certain types of vulnerabilities and exploitation techniques.

Microsoft has championed many initiatives to advance security and to help protect our customers, including the Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) process and Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD). We formed industry collaboration programs such as the Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP) and Microsoft Vulnerability Research (MSVR),and created the BlueHat Prize to encourage research into defensive technologies. Since June 2013, we’ve also offered bounties for certain classes of vulnerabilities reported to us. These bounty programs help Microsoft harness the collective intelligence and capabilities of security researchers to help protect customers. As you’ll see from the list below, several time-limited programs apply only to preview versions, so we can address the vulnerabilities before the final version is complete.

Take a look at the active programs below and review the program details at each link. If you have a vulnerability that might be a match for one of our bounty programs, please contact us at securemicrosoftm with details.

    Happy Hunting!
